It's that time of year again! The Purple Rose Tearoom will be having our 5th Annual Celebration of Chocolate on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Join us as we celebrate everyone's favorite flavor! We'll have chocolate scones with chocolate cream, chocolate desserts, and even chocolate teas.

This is by far our largest event of the year, and it always sells out, so make your reservation soon to guarantee a spot! We will be taking reservations from 11:00 AM through 1:30 PM. Cost is $17.99 + tax per person.

Enjoy a Victorian-style tea at Purple Rose Tea Room as Kim Szczypinski leads us on an armchair journey with a number of intrepid 19^th Century women, who set off for adventures around the globe.

These include Amelia Edwards, the inspiration for novelist Elizabeth Peters’ popular archaeologist-detective heroine Amelia Peabody, and Gertrude Bell, who founded the Baghdad Archaeological Museum and played a key political role in the establishment of modern Iraq.

Kim Szczypinski works in the study abroad field and holds an MA in European History from Duquesne University and a BA in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. A lifelong resident of Lawrenceville, she is an intrepid traveler herself, having visited 20 countries around the world and isn’t finished yet.

Join us for a presentation by Judi Vitale, astrologer and author of

wonderful vintage clothing for another event. This time we will be

After experimenting for one year with serving lunch, we have decided to
return to what we do best. So, effective June 1, 2010, the Purple Rose
Tearoom will no longer be open for lunch. We will continue to serve
Afternoon Tea by reservation on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between
11AM and 1:30PM. And we are certainly available for your private events!
So if you have a bridal or baby shower coming up, know someone who will be
celebrating a special birthday, or have something else to celebrate, give
us a call!

We will also be offering more special events. We will be holding a wine
tasting event in July, featuring the wines from Michael Stephen Kavic
Winery. Stay tuned for more details! And Patti Peer will be returning in
September with her wonderful vintage clothing. We will also be featuring

The Amazing Teapot Story!

A couple visited us at the tearoom for the first time last weekend. I filled a red and white teapot with water and brought it to their table. The woman commented that she used to have a teapot that looked just like that--even had the same chip on the lid! She said that she had written the number of cups that it holds on the bottom of hers in black permanent marker. I lifted the teapot and looked underneath. There was "3 cups" written as plain as day! How amazing that she and her teapot crossed paths again!

The Purple Rose Tearoom will be having a Victorian Christmas tea on Saturday,
November 22nd. We will be taking reservations any time between 11:00AM and
2:00PM that day. Come and enjoy the holiday decorations!

Once again, the Purple Rose Tearoom will be participating in the Lawrenceville

Be sure and stop by the Purple Rose tearoom to see our Victorian doll house! Our 11 room doll house is a beautiful display of Victorian finery. It is now on display in our window. Come and see if you can spot some of the tiniest details: a broken egg, a partially eaten apple, a baby's pacifier and more. We are hoping in the near future to have the house's electricity operational. In the meantime, you can admire the handmade curtains and the kitchen floor with real grout in it. And we'll be glad to tell you all the fun stories associated with the house's history, including the recent one involving Abbey the Cat!

Tea Tastings

One of the best ways to expand your tea knowledge is through a tea tasting. As with anything else, we tend to fall into a routine when it comes to drinking tea: we have our favorite flavors or favorite brands, and we stick with them. But if we stay within our comfort zone, we'll never know what other wonders may await us.

There are several ways to break out of your tea routine. One of the best ways is through a tea tasting. A tea tasting isn't just about trying out a cup of tea--you could do that on your own. A good tea tasting is also about gaining knowledge. Whether its about the different types of teas, or tea history, or other aspects of tea, you will learn from the person conducting the tasting.

We recently held a private tea tasting at the Purple Rose Tearoom. We explored tea history, discussed the differences between types of teas, and even talked about the different ways to steep a cup of tea. Everyone left with a better understanding of their favorite beverage.

Tea and Culture--Part 2

Have you ever gone into a tea shop that sells loose teas and admired the rows of tea in glass containers? They usually have the most wonderful artwork on the labels! Usually the pictures try to capture some of the essence of the tea--caravans of camels, British nobles, etc. But frequently, you see labels with pictures of sailing ships on them. Were these teas drunk by sailors?

The sailing ship is actually hearkening back to an exciting time in tea history. After the British were overcome with tea fever, the arrival of the first shipments of the season from the Far East was a very important event. There was a tea exchange in London where the arriving teas were auctioned off. You can imagine that a population starving for tea was willing to pay top dollar (or in this case "pound") for the first tea to make it to market.

The tea companies knew this, and they would use the fastest ships and the best crews to race from the Far East, around the Cape of Good Hope and up the Thames. The Clipper Ships soon came to dominate the tea trade due to their great speed. There were many famous races and many famous ships. Sometimes, the ships would race up the Thames within minutes of each other.

If you are admiring the ship on a container of tea, if the ship has a black hull, it is the Cutty Sark, the fastest Clipper Ship of them all. So you can impress your friends by not only knowing why there is a ship advertising tea, but knowing the ship's name as well!

Interestingly enough, this most famous tea clipper still exists! The Cutty Sark has been preserved in Greenwich, England. It was unfortunately damaged in a recent fire, but will be restored so we can all enjoy this important piece of tea history. For more information see www.cuttysark.org.uk

Reusing Teabags

We are often asked whether it is a good idea to reuse your teabag or not. After all, if a teabag or two will make an entire pot of tea, one should be good for more than just a cup!

While using a bag for more than one cup of tea is a matter of personal preference, there are some good reasons you might want to steep your bag more than once. The biggest reason is taste--the tea produced on the second steeping will have a milder taste than that of the first steeping. Many people prefer this milder tea.

Another reason you may want to steep more than once is to take advantage of tea's amazing health benefits. It seems that during the first steeping, most of the tea's caffeine is excreted into the beverage. If you reuse the teabag, there is considerably less caffeine in subsequent steepings. However, the wonderful healthy compounds in the tea remain at high levels. So if you'd like to take advantage of tea's health benefits but don't want quite so much caffeine in your body, just reuse your teabags!

Off to the World Tea Expo!

Well, last minute preparations are at hand before we leave for Las Vegas. It appears that most of you want us to bring back new and exciting tea flavors, so that we will do! We'll also be taking lots of exciting classes so we can share even more tea knowledge with you.

Its going to be 95 degrees in Las Vegas this weekend. Not the best circumstances to be tasting lots of hot tea! And tasting lots of tea is the whole point of the Expo. Well, maybe not the whole point, but what's a Tea Expo without tea? Its especially exciting to see what new flavors vendors have developed. It seems like everyone has their own special flavors, and the options are limitless!

We also like checking out the tea-related items. After all, you can't drink tea without lovely teacups, right? And you need plenty of other tea-related things to set a fine tea table. So we try to bring back some of the most unique things for our customers, like our wonderful tea cozies that keep teapots warmer than any others we've seen. Stay tuned for an update on our new items when we return.

Tea and Culture--Part 1

Did you know that tea is the second most frequently consumed beverage on Earth? Only water is more popular. This leads to tea being associated with many diverse cultures.

The British Afternoon Tea (NOT "high tea"--that means dinner) was invented by Anna, Duchess of Bedford some time in the early 1800s. Back then, people would eat a large breakfast (no stale donuts for them) then would eat a late meal at about 8:00PM. Needless to say, Anna complained of a "sinking feeling" in the middle of the afternoon. So she asked one of her servants to bring some light refreshments along with tea to her chambers. This afternoon meal caught on with Anna's friends (who were probably all just as hungry). Soon, the concept of Afternoon Tea was well established.

A warm cup of tea on a cold, wet day

Don't know about your part of the world, but its cold and wet in Pittsburgh today. Just the kind of weather that makes me want to curl up with a hot cup of tea! Have you ever noticed how soothing tea can be? You wrap your hands around a nice warm mug and enjoy the inviting aroma. A sip of tea just warms you from the inside out!

I bought a pair of teacup earrings from a street artist once. The little cups had soft curlicues rising out of them. The coffee cup earrings had jagged lightening bolts coming out of them. Sort of shows you the difference in drinking these two beverages, huh?

World Tea Expo

In an effort to provide our customers with the latest and greatest in the world of tea, we here at the Purple Rose Tearoom always attend the World Tea Expo. This year's Expo will be at the end of May in Las Vegas NV. We'll be taking lots of classes and talking to lots of vendors. We're hoping to find some unusual tea flavors to bring back for you. We'll also be looking for tea-related items, especially books. So if anyone has an special items you'd like us to look into, please let us know!

One of the most exciting things about the World Tea Expo is that we get to meet other tearoom operators from around the country and the world. Its so interesting to see other people's takes on the tearoom concept! Ours is a traditional Victorian tea. But we've met people who have Asian-themed tearooms, bookstores with tearooms, etiquette businesses and much more. Which really goes to show you that tea is a beverage for all of us.

Tea and Health

It seems you can't pick up a magazine or newspaper anymore without seeing an article about the health benefits of tea! Just today, I read how they're finding that tea is good for your memory.

Now, the Tea Lady is not a doctor and doesn't quite know how all this works, but I'm certainly not going to complain! Most of the articles I read talk about tea being high in antioxidants--those wonderful things that can also be found in tasty foods like blueberries and dark chocolate. These antioxidants apparently then go through your body and clean up the damage done by nasty free radicals. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but just knowing my cherished cup of tea is helping my body just makes me feel warm all over.

White tea is especially high in antioxidants, since it is the least processed of the teas. And you can't go to the store without seeing all sorts of things popping up with white tea in them. The other day, I even picked up a box of cereal that contained white tea! Just goes to show you that we tea lovers have been ahead of the curve all along.

Decisions, decisions!

Not so very long ago, if you went into a restaurant and asked for a cup of tea,
they looked at you sort of funny, then fished out some mangled bag of Lipton
from the back of a drawer somewhere. My, how times have changed! Now, we are
faced with a dizzying array of teas--even the venerable Lipton has many
different flavors! How does one decide?

We often have tea novices visit the Purple Rose. Sometimes they can be
intimidated by our 30+ teas. But always keep in mind--if you are visiting us
or any other tearoom--it is perfectly acceptable to ask for advice.

I frequently have people ask for guidance when selecting a tea. Usually, I will
start by asking whether they like a strong tea, or a more delicate flavor. We
normally feature certain seasonal teas, which we feel fit well with the time of
year. And since you can try as many flavors as you'd like, you don't need to
worry about picking something that's not to your taste.

As for my personal favorites, it depends on my mood. Currently, I'm on a
strong, black tea kick--Irish Breakfast, Earl Grey, etc. And I love a nice,
smooth rooibus! White teas are especially nice when I am looking for something
delicate and soothing.

So, if you get the chance to try something new, go ahead and push the envelope!
You never know what you might find.
